WhatsApp which has been recently acquired by Facebook for a whopping 19 billion dollars has added an interesting feature with its latest update. The WhatsApp update now lets you pay for your friends’/family members’ or for that matter any of your contacts’ WhatsApp subscription.

We already know that WhatsApp is a cross-platform mobile messaging app that lets you message your contacts. WhatsApp app is available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Symbian platforms. WhatsApp is free of charge for the first year and from thereon, you have to pay a subscription fee of $0.99/year to keep using the messaging app.

With the latest update, WhatsApp had added a new feature called ‘Pay for a friend’ that lets you pay the subscription fee of any of your contacts. This update lets WhatsApp reach more users and is also a major convenience for the existing users. You can pay for the subscription fees of your contacts (friends, family, colleagues etc.) that you regularly keep in touch with. This avoids your costly text messaging and voice call bills for a meager 99 cents per year.

How To Pay For Friends/Family Members Subscription On WhatsApp?

1. Open WhatsApp and go to ‘Settings’.

2. In the ‘Settings’ menu go to ‘Contacts’.

3. In the ‘Contacts’ menu you will find the ‘Pay for a friend’ option. In this option tap on ‘Choose a contact’ to pay the subscription fee of any member in your contact list.

You can choose to pay for 1 year, 3 years or 5 years subscription fees of your friends or family members. The 1 year extension costs $0.99 while the 3 years and 5 years extension cost $2.67 and $3.71 respectively. You can pay this fees through Google Wallet or PayPal.

This update is a welcome move from WhatsApp at the right time considering that WhatsApp has more than 44 percent share among the smartphone messaging apps. WhatsApp has nearly half a billion users and intends to reach the billion mark in a very short span of time. This update should help push forward the messaging app in the right direction.

This update has added several other features like new privacy settings for last seen, profile photo and status and a Camera shortcut for quicker picture sending etc. to WhatsApp. WhatsApp also intends to add voice services in the second quarter of 2014.

    Me and my friends family are already discussing the place we’re going all to continue texting free messages, since there are really good options in the market.
    Sorry, but no one agree to what facebook have done to a free service like WhatsApp. We the users built it… we can change it.
