Tumblr, the popular blogging platform owned by Yahoo! has added a new security feature to its service called two-factor authentication (2FA). Two-factor authentication is slowly gaining popularity as an important security feature and drastically improves the security of the user accounts. It is already used by major services such as Google, Facebook, Twitter etc. So, what exactly is two-factor authentication and how does it help in improving the security of the user accounts?
What Is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication is a second layer of security to your account in addition to the password. By enabling two-factor authentication, you will receive an one-time password on your mobile which is to be used to login to your account. The one-time password could either be received through a SMS or an authenticator app.
The mobile is a personal object and is generally possessed by an individual at all times. Thus, linking your mobile to your account makes it difficult for an intruder trying to break in to your account. In addition to the password to your account he should also know the one-time password generated to your mobile and this should be highly impossible if you are a little careful.
How To Enable Two-Factor Authentication On Tumblr?
1. Login to your Tumblr account and go to settings and then click on ‘Account’.
2. In your account you will find the two-factor authentication option. Click on the option to enable two-factor authentication.
3. Select your country, enter your mobile number and enter your password. Click on ‘send’ to receive the 6 digit code on your mobile.
4. Enter the 6 digit code you receive on your mobile and click on enable to use two-factor authentication on your Tumblr account.
After you have enabled the two-factor authentication on your Tumblr account, every time you login to your account you will receive an unique code on your mobile either through sms or the authenticator app. The unique code has to be entered into the specified field to access your Tumblr account. This will act as an additional layer of security and protect your Tumblr account.
Two-factor authentication may sound a little tedious, but it is highly recommended that you don’t turn off two-factor authentication on your Tumblr account. 2FA protects your account at all times and improves its security.
